Birmingham City were forced to settle for a point after an entertaining 2-2 draw with Bristol City, with Demarai Gray converting a stoppage-time penalty to rescue the Blues after the visitors had looked on course to claim all three points.
The result means Birmingham remain unbeaten after their opening two Championship matches, following last weekend’s goalless draw away at Sheffield United. The Blues showed considerable character to come back twice, although there will also be concerns about the number of chances they allowed Bristol City to create.
First Half: Bristol City Take the Lead
Birmingham City started positively and looked to establish control, but Bristol City gradually grew into the contest as the opening half progressed.
The visitors went close on several occasions before taking the lead in the 33rd minute. Scott Twine followed up after his initial header came back to him following a challenge with Rob Dickie before finishing from close range.
It was Bristol City’s first goal against Birmingham and the first goal the Blues had conceded this season.
Birmingham responded well to going behind and were level just nine minutes later.
Vicente Effort Brings Birmingham Level
Carlos Vicente was credited with the equaliser in the match narrative, although the official scoreline records it as a 42nd-minute own goal by Bristol City goalkeeper Sam Tickle.
Vicente’s first-time effort from 12 yards found its way into the corner despite Tickle’s attempts to keep it out.
The equaliser ensured the sides went into the interval level at 1-1, setting up an open second half.
Bristol City Threaten After the Break
The second half produced an open contest, with both teams creating opportunities and Bristol City particularly dangerous in the attacking areas.
Tomoki Iwata fired over for Birmingham, while Bristol City missed a golden opportunity when Joe Williams side-footed wide.
The Robins continued to threaten and created a series of chances. James Beadle was called into action to deny Twine, while Lorent Tolaj headed wide from just two yards.
Jed Wallace also forced another impressive save from the Birmingham goalkeeper as Bristol City continued to put pressure on the Blues.
Substitute Tomi Horvat then tested Beadle, who produced another important stop to keep Birmingham level.
Dom Ballard Puts Bristol City Ahead
With just five minutes of normal time remaining, Bristol City regained the lead.
Substitute Dom Ballard produced an outstanding finish, flicking Rio Cardines’ cross with his back to goal and sending the ball looping over Beadle.
It was Ballard’s first Championship goal and appeared to have given Bristol City all three points.
Birmingham thought they had equalised almost immediately when Jhon Solis found the net from a Cochrane corner, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
The visitors were then denied by another excellent Beadle save at the other end as Birmingham continued to search for a late response.
Demarai Gray Rescues Birmingham City
Just when it appeared Birmingham were heading towards defeat, the decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time.
A handball inside the Bristol City penalty area resulted in a spot-kick, and substitute Demarai Gray stepped up in the 95th minute.
Gray kept his composure and fired the penalty home to make it 2-2, sparking huge celebrations inside St Andrew’s.
The late equaliser ensured Birmingham avoided defeat and preserved their unbeaten start to the Championship campaign.
It was another example of Birmingham’s resilience, but Chris Davies will also know that his side were fortunate to escape with a point after Bristol City created a number of excellent second-half opportunities.

The Verdict
For Birmingham City, the biggest positive is the character shown to come back twice, particularly with the late penalty arriving after Bristol City had looked likely to take maximum points.
However, there will be concerns about the number of chances conceded. Bristol City created several excellent opportunities and could quite easily have scored more than twice, with Beadle producing a number of important saves to keep Birmingham in the contest.
Birmingham have now taken two points from their opening two Championship games, with two clean sheets at Sheffield United followed by today’s four-goal thriller.
The Blues remain unbeaten, but the performance showed that there is still plenty for Chris Davies to work on defensively.
Most importantly, Birmingham showed that they are capable of fighting until the final whistle. Demarai Gray’s 95th-minute penalty ensured the Blues left St Andrew’s with something to show for their efforts.
