Birmingham City 2-2 Middlesbrough: Late Heartbreak Denies Blues Victory
Birmingham City 2-2 Middlesbrough
EFL Championship - Saturday 19 September 2026
Birmingham City were left frustrated after Middlesbrough snatched a dramatic late equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw at home in an entertaining Championship encounter.
The Blues looked on course for an impressive comeback victory after overturning a half-time deficit with two goals in five second-half minutes, but Adilson Malanda struck in the 88th minute to deny Chris Davies’ side all three points.
Blues Start Brightly Against Middlesbrough
Birmingham City made the more positive start and created the first opportunities of the afternoon.
Jhon Solis went close inside the opening five minutes after dispossessing Malanda and combining with Tomoki Iwata, but his effort from the edge of the area drifted narrowly wide.
The Blues continued to threaten, with Carlos Vicente and Bright Osayi-Samuel combining down the right before Luis Vázquez met the resulting delivery with a header that forced Radek Vitek into action.
Middlesbrough Take the Lead Before Half-Time
Middlesbrough gradually grew into the game, with Amario Cozier-Duberry becoming an increasing threat on the right flank.
The visitors had a big opportunity when Myles Peart-Harris picked out Cozier-Duberry with a pull-back, but the winger lifted his effort over the crossbar.
However, just when it looked as though the two sides would go into the break level, Middlesbrough struck.
In the 45th minute, Cozier-Duberry received a sweeping diagonal ball from Malanda before creating space and finding Max Arfsten, who fired a first-time finish into the top corner.
Birmingham went into half-time 1-0 down despite having enjoyed promising spells during the opening 45 minutes.
Liam Millar Changes the Game for Birmingham
The second half began with Birmingham showing far greater attacking intent.
Ten minutes after the restart, the Blues were level.
Middlesbrough lost possession, allowing Tomoki Iwata to win the ball before Jhon Solis drove forward into the penalty area.
With the angle appearing to close down, Liam Millar arrived at exactly the right moment and fired beyond Vitek to score his first goal for Birmingham City.
The equaliser lifted both the players and the home crowd.
Blues Complete the Comeback
Birmingham completed the turnaround just four minutes later.
A Liam Millar corner was headed back across the six-yard box by Jay Stansfield, with the ball ricocheting around the crowded penalty area before eventually going into the Middlesbrough net off Riley McGree.
From 1-0 down at half-time, Birmingham suddenly found themselves 2-1 ahead.
The rapid turnaround gave the Blues the advantage and put Chris Davies’ side in a position to secure all three points.
Birmingham City Look to Close Out the Victory
Birmingham had opportunities to extend their advantage.
With 20 minutes remaining, Iwata came close to adding a third when he met another dangerous Millar delivery at the near post, but his header flashed over the bar.
Middlesbrough responded by making attacking changes, bringing on Tommy Conway, Sebastian Berhalter, Jeremy Sarmiento and later Kyle Joseph as they searched for a way back into the match.
Birmingham defended increasingly deep as the visitors pushed forward, with the Blues desperate to protect their slender advantage.
It appeared that Davies’ side had done enough to secure a valuable three points.
But then came the late heartbreak.
Late Heartbreak for Birmingham City
With just two minutes of normal time remaining, Middlesbrough won a free-kick.
Sebastian Berhalter delivered an inswinging ball towards the Birmingham goal which appeared to be heading comfortably into the hands of James Beadle.
However, the Birmingham goalkeeper was unable to hold the delivery.
Kyle Joseph reacted quickest and got to the loose ball, with Malanda then pouncing from close range to stab the ball into the net and make it 2-2.
Birmingham appealed for a foul on Beadle during the scramble, but referee David Webb allowed the goal to stand.
The Blues were unable to find a winner during the remaining minutes, with Middlesbrough leaving with a point after what had looked like a lost cause only moments earlier.
A Frustrating Afternoon for the Blues
There was plenty for Birmingham to take from the performance, particularly the way they responded after going into half-time behind.
Millar’s first goal for the club and the rapid turnaround at the beginning of the second half had put Birmingham in a commanding position.
But the late goal will undoubtedly leave the Blues feeling that two points have been thrown away.
For Middlesbrough, meanwhile, Malanda’s late intervention completed a remarkable escape.
Birmingham now head into the international break having taken a point from an entertaining contest that they will feel should have ended differently.
The biggest frustration will be that, after showing the character to come from behind and take control of the game, the Blues could not see it through.
