Chelsea Women 2-0 Birmingham City Women: Blues Beaten at Stamford Bridge
Barclays Women’s Super League - Saturday 19 September 2026
Stamford Bridge, London
Birmingham City Women suffered their second defeat of the 2026/27 Barclays Women’s Super League campaign as Chelsea Women recorded a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
Amy Merricks’ side faced a major challenge against one of the WSL’s leading sides, and although Birmingham defended resolutely for long periods, Chelsea’s pressure eventually told.
Lexi Potter gave Chelsea the lead inside the opening 10 minutes before substitute Melvine Malard settled the contest with a second goal in the 71st minute.
Despite the defeat, Birmingham showed periods of resilience and were able to frustrate their hosts after the interval, with goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley producing several important saves to keep the scoreline within reach.
Chelsea Start Quickly
Chelsea dominated possession from the opening whistle and immediately pushed Birmingham back.
The hosts were rewarded in the eighth minute when Lexi Potter found the breakthrough, giving Chelsea the perfect start.
Birmingham struggled to establish sustained possession during the opening stages as Chelsea moved the ball quickly and looked to exploit spaces around the Blues defence.
Sophie Baggaley was called upon several times as Chelsea looked to extend their advantage. The Birmingham goalkeeper produced an excellent display, making important saves and helping prevent the hosts from turning their early dominance into a more substantial lead.
Chelsea also struck the woodwork through Sjoeke Nüsken as the home side continued to threaten.
For Birmingham, reaching half-time only one goal behind represented an opportunity to regroup and find a way back into the contest.
Birmingham Show More After the Break
Amy Merricks’ side returned for the second half with greater purpose.
The Blues began to find more opportunities to move forward and looked more comfortable in possession than they had during the opening 45 minutes.
There was also a warning for Chelsea when Wilma Leidhammar managed to get a shot away for Birmingham, although Hannah Hampton was able to deal with the effort.
Chelsea continued to create opportunities, however, and remained in control of the overall contest.
Birmingham’s defensive organisation kept the hosts from adding to their advantage, while Baggaley continued to provide a strong last line of defence.
The Blues were also able to introduce Suzu Amano from the bench, with the Japan international replacing Lee Geum-min in the 66th minute.
Malard Doubles Chelsea’s Lead
Chelsea made the decisive breakthrough in the 71st minute.
Melvine Malard, introduced from the bench only eight minutes earlier, found the back of the net to make it Chelsea 2-0 Birmingham City.
The goal provided Chelsea with the breathing space they had been searching for and made Birmingham’s task considerably more difficult.
The Blues continued to work hard but were unable to find the attacking quality required to get themselves back into the contest.
Chelsea managed the closing stages effectively and saw out the match to claim all three points and another clean sheet.
A Difficult Afternoon for Birmingham
The final scoreline reflected Chelsea’s control of the match, although Birmingham can take some encouragement from the way they competed after the interval.
Chelsea had the majority of possession and created the greater number of opportunities, while Birmingham’s best periods came when they were able to break out of their defensive shape and attack with greater speed.
For goalkeeper Baggaley, it was another afternoon where her performance helped keep Birmingham in contention for long periods.
The result leaves Birmingham still searching for their first WSL victory of the campaign following their opening-day defeat to Manchester City and last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Brighton.
The Blues now have the opportunity to regroup and focus on their next fixture as they continue their return to the Women’s Super League.

The Bigger Picture
Birmingham entered the game with one point from their opening two league matches, having followed a 3-1 defeat away to Manchester City with a 2-2 home draw against Brighton.
Chelsea, meanwhile, arrived after an emphatic 5-0 victory over Manchester United and continued that momentum with another clean-sheet victory.
For Birmingham, the return to the WSL was always going to involve difficult afternoons against established top-flight opposition. The priority now will be to take the positives from the performance, learn from the areas where Chelsea exposed them and focus on collecting points in the fixtures where opportunities are likely to be greater.
The Blues remain very much in the early stages of their WSL campaign, and there is plenty of football still to come.
Keep Right On!
