Emil Hansson Set to Leave Birmingham City
Birmingham City winger Emil Hansson is set to leave the club as the January transfer window continues, with an agreement reached for the Swedish wide man to return to the Netherlands with Eredivisie side Excelsior Rotterdam. The move brings an end to a spell at St Andrew’s that promised much but ultimately fell short of expectations on a consistent basis.
A Promising Signing That Never Fully Clicked
Hansson arrived at Birmingham City in the summer of 2024, signing a three-year deal after impressing in Dutch football. His performances for Heracles Almelo in the Eredivisie had highlighted his technical ability, movement in wide areas and attacking intent, leading to optimism that he could adapt quickly to Championship football.
There was genuine anticipation around his arrival, with supporters hoping his creativity and direct style would add a new dimension to Birmingham City’s attacking play. While Hansson featured regularly during his time in the Midlands, he struggled to consistently influence matches in the final third, particularly in terms of goals and assists, as the physical demands of the Championship proved challenging.
Loan Spell and Frustrations
In the summer of 2025, Birmingham City sanctioned a loan move to Blackpool in League One, with the aim of providing Hansson with regular minutes and a platform to rebuild confidence. Although he saw plenty of game time, he was unable to establish himself as a decisive figure during his spell on the Fylde Coast.
As discussions progressed over a permanent move back to the Netherlands, Birmingham City recalled Hansson from Blackpool ahead of his impending transfer. During this period, the winger described the situation as “sad and brutal”, reflecting the personal difficulties players can face when a move does not develop as planned.
Return to the Eredivisie
Now aged 27, Hansson is poised to return to the Eredivisie with Excelsior Rotterdam, a league he knows well and where he has previously produced his most effective football. Both clubs have reportedly agreed terms, with the transfer expected to be completed shortly. More information on the competition can be found via the official Eredivisie website.
Excelsior will provide familiar surroundings, with Hansson having previously played in Dutch football for clubs including Feyenoord, RKC Waalwijk, Fortuna Sittard and Heracles Almelo.
A Fresh Opportunity for Player and Club
For Birmingham City, Hansson’s departure represents a chance for both parties to reset. With a crowded squad and clear ambitions in the Championship, the club has opted to move in a different direction. For Hansson, a return to the Netherlands offers an opportunity to revive his career in an environment where he has previously thrived.
