Birmingham City Women have made an extremely interesting addition to their coaching staff with the appointment of Mark Beard as Assistant Head Coach, bringing extensive experience from professional playing, academy development, coaching and first-team management.
Beard’s arrival at St Andrew’s represents a significant addition to the Birmingham City Women coaching structure. His career has taken him through several different areas of the professional game, giving him experience both as a player and as a coach responsible for developing footballers.

From Professional Player to Highly Regarded Coach
Beard enjoyed a long professional playing career after coming through the youth systems at Wimbledon and Millwall.
He made his senior debut for Millwall in 1993 and went on to make 152 appearances for the Lions. One of the memorable moments of his Millwall career came when he scored in the club’s famous FA Cup victory away at Arsenal in 1995.
Beard subsequently played for Sheffield United and Southend United, where he became particularly highly regarded and won the club’s Player of the Year award during the 1998/99 season.
He also enjoyed spells with Stevenage Borough and AFC Wimbledon, helping Wimbledon achieve promotion through the play-offs in 2008. He was also part of the Stevenage side that lifted the FA Trophy in 2007.
That playing career gave Beard something that cannot simply be gained through coaching qualifications: first-hand experience of professional football, dressing rooms, pressure, competition and the standards required to succeed.
Mark Beard’s Spanish Connection
There is also an interesting connection between Beard and Spain.
During his playing career, he moved to Spain and became involved with UD San Pedro, establishing a youth academy before also playing for the club.
That experience gave Beard an early introduction to player development and coaching, an area that would subsequently become a major part of his professional career after hanging up his boots.
Developing the Next Generation
Beard’s coaching CV is particularly impressive when it comes to developing young footballers.
He worked with Crawley Town’s academy before moving into the Brighton & Hove Albion academy system.
In 2017, he became Brighton’s Under-18 coach, a position he held for four years. During that period, Beard helped oversee the development of a generation of young players and established a reputation as a highly respected academy coach.
His work at Brighton also produced tangible success. In 2021, his Under-17 side won the Premier League Cup, defeating Middlesbrough 2-0 in the final.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s own account of Beard’s departure confirms that he had joined the club in 2014, became Under-18s boss in 2017 and guided the Under-17s to the Premier League Cup title.
That background could be particularly valuable to Birmingham City Women as the club continues to develop its own pathway and build a squad capable of competing at the highest levels.
Experience Beyond the Academy
Beard’s career has not been restricted to youth football.
After Brighton, he became assistant manager at Stockport County, working alongside Simon Rusk. He subsequently became Head of Coaching at Dorking Wanderers before taking charge of Eastbourne Borough as first-team manager in 2023.
His experience in senior football gave him another perspective on the game, including dealing with results, recruitment, player development, tactics, staff management and the demands of running a senior team.
He has also continued to work within professional player development, including a spell with Hull City, further strengthening his experience within the professional academy environment.
Beard also holds a UEFA A Licence, adding another important qualification to an already broad coaching background.

Beard is also the brother of the late Matt Beard, one of the influential managers in the history of the women’s game.
Matt’s career included Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool, where he won consecutive Women’s Super League titles with Liverpool in 2013 and 2014.
Mark has therefore been very close to the women’s game for many years and has had a unique insight into the demands of coaching elite female players.
Mark represented his brother’s family at the 2025/26 WSL Football Awards, where Matt was honoured posthumously in recognition of his contribution to the women’s game.
