Norwich City 2-1 Birmingham City: Blues Suffer First Championship Defeat of the Season
Birmingham City suffered their first defeat of the Championship season on Wednesday night as Norwich City secured a 2-1 victory at Carrow Road.
The Blues travelled to Norfolk looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign following Sunday’s entertaining 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Chris Davies’ side started brightly and created opportunities during the opening stages, but Norwich punished Birmingham during a crucial spell before half-time.
Oscar Schwartau produced a spectacular strike to put the Canaries ahead before Papa Diallo doubled the advantage 11 minutes later. Carlos Vicente pulled one back for Birmingham after the interval, and the Blues pushed hard for an equaliser, but Davies’ side could not find the second goal they needed.
Blues Start Brightly at Carrow Road
Birmingham began the game positively at Carrow Road and looked the more threatening side during the opening exchanges.
Jay Stansfield was involved early on, while Liam Millar also looked dangerous as the Blues attempted to put Norwich under pressure.
The visitors thought they had taken the lead in the 22nd minute when Millar finished at the back post after good work from Birmingham’s attack. However, the assistant referee’s flag ruled the goal out for offside.
It proved to be a hugely controversial moment, with Birmingham manager Chris Davies later stating that he had been told the goal should have stood.
Rather than allowing the decision to derail them, Birmingham continued to look dangerous. However, Norwich gradually began to find space and made their opportunity count.
Schwartau Produces a Stunning Finish
Norwich broke the deadlock in the 28th minute through Oscar Schwartau.
The young Dane collected the ball centrally before advancing towards the edge of the Birmingham penalty area. With space in front of him, Schwartau unleashed a powerful right-footed strike which flew beyond James Beadle and into the net.
It was a superb finish and gave Norwich the advantage despite Birmingham having enjoyed a promising start.
The Blues were then punished again just 11 minutes later as Norwich increased their advantage.
Diallo Doubles Norwich’s Lead
Andre Brooks worked his way into a dangerous position on the right before delivering a cross into the Birmingham penalty area.
Papa Diallo had been left unmarked and made no mistake, side-footing the ball beyond Beadle to make it 2-0.
It was Diallo’s first goal for Norwich and suddenly Birmingham found themselves facing a two-goal deficit after what had initially been a positive opening to the match.
The Blues attempted to respond before the interval, with Millar firing over following good work from Stansfield, but Norwich went into half-time holding a 2-0 lead.
Birmingham Respond After the Break
Davies demanded a response from his players and Birmingham improved after the restart.
The second half initially lacked the intensity of the opening period, but the Blues gradually began to take control and eventually found a way back into the contest.
On 64 minutes, Millar was once again at the heart of the move. The winger created space on the left before delivering a low ball into the danger area, where Carlos Vicente arrived to slide the ball home from close range.
The goal made it 2-1 and suddenly Norwich were under pressure.
Birmingham pushed forward looking for an equaliser and continued to create openings as the game entered its final stages.
Blues Come Close to Equalising
Vicente had a golden opportunity to level the match with around five minutes remaining.
Stansfield provided the opening, putting Vicente in with a clear sight of goal, but the Spanish winger could not find the finish required to beat the Norwich goalkeeper.
Norwich also had chances of their own, with Beadle producing an excellent save to deny Anthony Musaba from close range.
The Birmingham goalkeeper was also called upon to keep his side in the contest when Pelle Mattsson produced a low effort which Beadle brilliantly turned away.
Despite Birmingham’s late pressure, Norwich managed to withstand the challenge and secure all three points.
Davies: Blues Gave Themselves Too Much to Do
Chris Davies was understandably frustrated after the final whistle, particularly with the officials and the manner in which Birmingham conceded the two first-half goals.
The Blues boss felt Birmingham had started the game well and believed the disallowed Millar goal should have stood.
However, Davies also accepted that his team had to take responsibility for the period in which Norwich scored twice.
The Blues boss said Birmingham had defended poorly for both goals and admitted that conceding twice in such a short spell had ultimately left his side with too much to do away from home.
He was also particularly unhappy with the officiating, saying he could not remember feeling so disappointed with officials during his time in charge.
Davies’ assessment was clear: Birmingham had shown enough quality to get something from the game, but their poor spell before half-time proved decisive.
First Defeat But Plenty of Positives
Although the result will be disappointing for Birmingham, there were positives to take from the performance.
The Blues created opportunities, responded strongly after falling two goals behind and were within a chance of rescuing a point during the closing stages.
The defeat also brings an end to Birmingham’s unbeaten start to the Championship campaign. Norwich, meanwhile, recorded their third league victory in four matches and moved up the Championship table.
The match was played in front of 25,548 supporters at Carrow Road, with Norwich ultimately doing enough to protect their advantage despite Birmingham’s second-half fightback.
Blues Must Quickly Move On
For Davies and his players, the challenge now is to ensure Wednesday night’s defeat does not affect the excellent work done during the opening weeks of the season.
Birmingham showed at Carrow Road that they are capable of creating problems for Championship opponents away from home, but the defensive lapse before half-time demonstrated the fine margins involved at this level.
The Blues now have to regroup quickly, learn from the mistakes made in Norfolk and prepare for their next Championship challenge.
There is no need for panic. Birmingham remain a competitive side with plenty of attacking threat, and their response after half-time demonstrated the character within Davies’ squad.
However, the lesson from Carrow Road is clear: against good Championship opposition, Birmingham cannot afford to switch off for 15 minutes and expect to recover from a two-goal deficit.
