Sheffield United 0-0 Birmingham City: Blues Begin Championship Campaign With Bramall Lane Point
Birmingham City began their 2026/27 Sky Bet Championship campaign with a hard-earned point after Chris Davies’ side played out a goalless draw against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
In an opening league fixture between two clubs with ambitions of challenging towards the top end of the Championship, Birmingham produced a disciplined and encouraging performance but were unable to find the finishing touch required to take all three points.
The match was played on Saturday, 15 August 2026, with kick-off at 5:30pm. An attendance of 27,684 watched the contest at Bramall Lane, with Gavin Ward appointed as referee.
Cagey First Half at Bramall Lane
The first half was a largely cautious affair, with neither side managing to register a shot on target during the opening 45 minutes.
Sheffield United had the first notable opportunity when Patrick Bamford hooked a deflected Femi Seriki cross narrowly wide.
Birmingham responded almost immediately. Alex Cochrane delivered an inviting cross into the area which found Paik Seung-ho, but the midfielder could not generate enough power with his header to seriously trouble Sheffield United goalkeeper Michael Cooper.
Carlos Vicente also had an opportunity for the Blues during the opening period, although Birmingham’s attacking threat was generally limited as both defences remained on top.
The two sides went into half-time level at 0-0, with the game still waiting for a moment of quality to break the deadlock.
Defences Dominate Before the Break
Neither team was able to establish sustained control during the opening period, with both sides remaining organised without creating a clear-cut opportunity that resulted in a goal.
For Birmingham, the priority was to remain competitive against a Sheffield United side playing at home, while the hosts were similarly unable to find a way through the Blues’ defensive organisation.
Birmingham Improve After the Break
Birmingham started the second half with considerably more intent and began to exert greater control as the visitors looked to find a way to turn their improved possession into a breakthrough.
The Blues had a particularly promising moment in the 58th minute when Carlos Vicente was played through on goal. However, instead of taking the shot himself, Vicente attempted to find a teammate and Japhet Tanganga was able to intervene.
The pressure eventually produced Birmingham’s first effort on target in the 62nd minute.
Jay Stansfield worked space and fired a low effort towards goal, but Sheffield United goalkeeper Michael Cooper was equal to it and made an important save.
Cooper was called into action again shortly afterwards when Stansfield tried his luck from distance.
Paik Seung-ho also went close, with his header saved by Cooper as Birmingham continued to threaten during an increasingly positive spell.
Blues Finish Strongly but Cannot Find a Winner
Sheffield United survived Birmingham’s best spell and began to create opportunities of their own as the match entered its closing stages.
Callum O’Hare released Patrick Bamford into the penalty area, but Birmingham goalkeeper James Beadle stood up well and blocked Bamford’s effort with his feet.
Neither team could produce the decisive moment during the closing stages, however, and the points were ultimately shared.
Birmingham finished the game with 55% possession compared with Sheffield United’s 45%. The Blues also won eight corners to United’s two, registered two shots on target to Sheffield United’s one and won 67 duels compared with 65 for the hosts.
Chris Davies Makes Changes
Chris Davies made his first changes in the 74th minute, bringing on Demarai Gray for Jay Stansfield.
Maksym Bird replaced Paik Seung-ho six minutes later before Ethan Laird and Leandro Vázquez were introduced in the 87th minute for Carlos Vicente and August Priske respectively.
Sheffield United also made a number of changes as Chris Wilder attempted to find a way through Birmingham’s defence, but neither side was able to find the goal that would have settled the contest.
A Positive Point for Birmingham City
Although a goalless draw is unlikely to generate much excitement, there were plenty of positives for Birmingham City to take from their opening-day trip to Bramall Lane.
The Blues looked organised defensively and were competitive against a Sheffield United side that will also have ambitions towards the top end of the division.
James Beadle made an important save from Bamford, while Birmingham’s defensive organisation helped the visitors maintain a clean sheet throughout the contest.
More importantly, Birmingham grew into the game and looked the more threatening side for periods of the second half. The improved performance after the interval gave the Blues opportunities to take all three points, although they ultimately lacked the finishing touch required to break the deadlock.
Davies Believes Birmingham Deserved More
Chris Davies felt his team deserved more than a point after the final whistle, saying that he believed Birmingham were the better side and that, had either team won the match, it should have been his team.
The Birmingham boss also praised the way his players handled the opening stages in front of a passionate Bramall Lane crowd, believing the performance showed that his side were ready to compete.
One Point and a Clean Sheet to Start the Season
The result leaves Birmingham City with one point from their opening Championship fixture, with Sheffield United also taking a point from the encounter.
There is certainly room for improvement in the final third, but taking a point away from Bramall Lane, keeping a clean sheet and producing a competitive performance against one of the sides expected to challenge near the top of the division represents a solid start.
For Chris Davies and his players, the opening-day performance provides a platform on which to build. Birmingham were unable to turn their second-half pressure into a winning goal, but the defensive solidity and competitiveness shown at Bramall Lane will provide encouragement as the Championship campaign continues.
The Blues now turn their attention to their first home league fixture of the campaign, when they will look to turn a promising opening-day performance into three points.
