Willum Willumsson Departs St Andrew’s

Willum Þór Willumsson has officially parted ways with Birmingham City, bringing an end to his 18-month spell at St Andrew’s. The Icelandic midfielder has completed a move to Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen, drawing a line under a period that included both notable contributions and challenges during his time in English football.

From Iceland to England - The Journey to Birmingham

Willumsson, born in Reykjavík in October 1998, began his professional career in Iceland before moving abroad to Belarus with BATE Borisov. He later established himself in the Dutch top flight with Go Ahead Eagles, where his performances in the Eredivisie brought him wider recognition. That form attracted interest from clubs across Europe and ultimately led to Birmingham City securing his signature.

In July 2024, Birmingham City signed the attacking midfielder on a four-year deal from Go Ahead Eagles. The move formed part of a wider summer recruitment drive following relegation to League One, as the club looked to rebuild and return to the Championship at the first attempt.

Key Role in Promotion Success

Influence in League One

Willumsson quickly became a regular presence during the 2024-25 campaign. Operating primarily in an advanced midfield role, he featured consistently and contributed to Birmingham City’s promotion push. His blend of physical presence and technical ability added an extra dimension in the final third as the Blues went on to secure the EFL League One title and a return to the Championship.

Struggles in the Championship

Despite his role in promotion, opportunities became more limited in the Championship. Increased competition and the demands of the division saw Willumsson struggle to reproduce the same influence, with reduced starts and playing time under manager Chris Davies. During this period, reports suggested he had fallen out of favour and was considering options away from the club.

By early February 2026, confirmation emerged that Willumsson had left Birmingham City to join NEC Nijmegen, returning to a league where he had previously enjoyed success.

Legacy at Birmingham City

Willumsson’s time with the Blues will be remembered as one of mixed experiences, but his contribution to the promotion-winning season remains a positive chapter. Having played a part in Birmingham City’s return to the Championship, he now begins a new stage of his career in the Netherlands, closing an important chapter at St Andrew’s.
