News broke today that Craig Gardner is stepping down from his role as Birmingham City’s Director of Football, bringing to an end a remarkable five-year period of service off the pitch and a relationship with the Club that spans far longer than that.
While football often focuses on results, transfers and league tables, Craig Gardner’s story at Birmingham City is ultimately one of loyalty, commitment and an unwavering passion for the football club he has always loved.
The Player
When Craig Gardner arrived at St. Andrew’s in January 2010, Blues were signing far more than just a midfielder. They were bringing in a lifelong supporter who understood exactly what the badge meant to the people of Birmingham.
His impact was immediate.
Gardner played a pivotal role in one of the greatest seasons in the club’s modern history. His dramatic extra-time winner against West Ham United sent Blues to the League Cup Final, and just weeks later he helped the Club achieve the impossible by defeating Arsenal at Wembley to lift the 2011 League Cup - Birmingham City’s first major trophy in almost half a century.
For many supporters, that season will forever be associated with Gardner’s energy, determination and ability to deliver in the biggest moments.
After spells away from the Club, he returned in 2017, proving once again where his heart truly belonged. While his second spell came during more difficult times, his commitment never wavered.
The Coach
When his playing career came to an end in 2020, Gardner could easily have moved elsewhere. Instead, he chose to continue serving Birmingham City.
He transitioned into coaching, first as player-coach before becoming a permanent member of the first-team staff. During a turbulent period for the Club, Gardner stepped forward whenever he was needed, including helping guide the team through difficult moments and managerial changes.
At a time when stability was often hard to find, Gardner remained a constant presence around the training ground and dressing room.
The Director
Perhaps Gardner’s greatest contribution came behind the scenes.
Appointed Technical Director in 2021 before being promoted to Director of Football in 2025, he became one of the key figures helping Birmingham City navigate one of the most transformative periods in its history.
The Club that Gardner inherited off the pitch was very different from the ambitious, forward-thinking organisation supporters see today.
He played a significant role during the transition from the previous ownership to the Knighthead era. In fact, senior figures at the Club publicly acknowledged that Gardner’s efforts were instrumental in helping complete the takeover that has transformed Birmingham City’s future.
From helping reshape football operations to supporting the long-term vision that now includes a new stadium project, world-class training facilities and a renewed belief throughout the fanbase, Gardner has been part of virtually every major step forward over the past five years.
Not every decision in football works perfectly. No sporting director, manager or player has a flawless record. But what can never be questioned is Gardner’s dedication to Birmingham City and his desire to leave the Club in a stronger position than he found it.
A Birmingham City Man
Football clubs are built on people who genuinely care.
Craig Gardner cared.
Whether scoring goals on the pitch, coaching from the sidelines or helping shape the Club’s future in the boardroom, he always approached the role with pride and passion.
He celebrated the highs, endured the lows and consistently put Birmingham City first.
For many supporters, he will forever be remembered as the local lad who helped bring a major trophy back to St. Andrew’s. For others, he will be remembered as one of the key figures who helped guide the Club into a new era.
Whatever chapter of his Blues story you remember most, one thing is certain:
Craig Gardner leaves Birmingham City having given everything he had to the Club he loves.
On behalf of everyone at BCFC Fanzine, we thank Craig for his service, his commitment and the memories.
Once a Blue, always a Blue.
Keep Right On.
John
